Eco-Design of Hybrid Nanomaterials

 

To overcome the health risk associated with powders containing nanoparticles, Lotus Synthesis has adopted a development strategy geared exclusively towards nanoparticle dispersions. In a dispersion, nanoparticles are concealed in liquid (often water), whereas nanoparticle-containing powder can release airborne nanoparticles. These nanoparticles are invisible to the naked eye and are potentially dangerous. Handling nanoparticle dispersions instead of powder prevents any risk of inhalation. Our patented technology only involves nanoparticle dispersions and excludes powder- from manufacturing to the delivery at the customer facility.


Nanoparticles have a high affinity for one another and tend to agglomerate. This agglomeration makes nanoparticle dispersions more viscous, turbid, and improper for industrial use. Once agglomeration has taken place, it is nearly impossible to reverse it.

Lotus Synthesis' patented process yields highly-stable dispersions containing more than 30% of nanoparticles by weight, in which agglomeration does not take place. These dispersions are homogeneous, fluid, transparent, and have a shelf-life of more than one year (cf. photo).


Once included in the customer formula (water or solvent based), our products bring new properties to it: e.g., self-cleaning effect, high refractive index, protection against UV/ abrasion/ foul odors/ microorganisms, luminescence, ignifugation, hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity...

 

With our patented Sol-Gel process, we control the particle size (diameter of the order of 5 to 15 nm) and the surface chemistry. If needed by the customer, we can also design core-shell structures. The fine-tuning of reaction kinetics yields batches of a consistent quality.

The dispersions made by Lotus Synthesis are intended to be incorporated into the formulations of our customers. They are ready-to-use, and a conventional deposition method can be used (i.e., spray-, spin- or dip-coating, as well as roll-to-roll coating or padding).

Our target industries are diverse and our dispersions can be utilized in the following industries: paints, varnishes, inks, optical films, technical textiles, environment (depollution of air/water), photovoltaics, or cosmetics.

LS100

LS100 is a family of photocatalytic dispersions (nanoTiO2 anatase dispersed in water).

These dispersions are intended to be included in photocatalytic coatings. They will give the coating the following properties:

Self-cleaning, if placed outdoors (natural sunlight is required, because UV is necessary).

Anti-odour, if placed indoor or outdoor (even indoor UV levels are sufficient for this function).

Nanoparticles of Cerium-doped TiO2 (anatase), dispersed in water.

The LS200 family is a non-photocatalytic UV-absorber. These dispersions are to be incorporated into anti-UV coatings.
